James Rose — Founder and Creative Director, Tartan Underdog
James Rose is an award-winning Scottish actor, writer, director, and producer committed to telling emotionally truthful stories that celebrate the human experience. After graduating from Robert Gordon University, he began his career in business before training as an actor at The Oxford School of Drama. His performance work spans theatre, independent film, and international screen campaigns, including the Cannes-recognised commercial Simon the Ogre.
Guided by a deep interest in psychology and human behaviour, James completed a Master of Science in Psychology and an MFA in Filmmaking at Raindance Film School. He is a full member of the British Psychological Society (FMBPsS) and has built respected work supporting mental health and performance, helping artists and leaders thrive under pressure. These insights inform his approach to collaboration and his understanding of character, emotion, and story.
James founded Tartan Underdog to bring meaningful stories to the screen, often infused with elements of magical realism that transform ordinary experiences into moments of wonder. His projects include the award-winning documentary Youth Voices on the United Nations Goals, highlighting how the UN Sustainable Development Goals inspire young people worldwide; Sweet Defeat, capturing the lived experiences of diabetes communities in Los Angeles; and the narrative feature A Song for Gran, filmed in Scotland and the United States.
At Tartan Underdog, James combines the craft of acting, the discipline of directing, and a psychological understanding of what moves people. His mission is to create work that inspires hope, fosters empathy, and celebrates human resilience, with films currently in development across the United Kingdom, the United States, and Europe.
